Scholarships

The Trinidad & Tobago Cultural Society of B.C. offers three types of scholarships annually to celebrate and reward academic, community and cultural endeavours. Descriptions and criteria are outlined as follows:

1) Cecil Ash Memorial Scholarship:

  • Purpose: This scholarship is intended to assist Grade 12 graduates with tuition toward their first year of post-secondary study.
  • Value: $500
  • Criteria:
    • Open to all graduating (Grade 12) B.C. Secondary School students with Trinidad and Tobagonian family background.
    • Please submit an essay relating to your Trinidadian heritage and include your intentions for post-secondary studies (Word limit: 500 words).
    • Please provide copies of your academic transcripts for senior coursework (Grades 11and 12).
    • Please provide proof of upcoming enrolment in a post-secondary institution.
  • Application Deadline: JUNE 30, 2023
  • Selection Announcement: JULY 23, 2023 

2) Trinidad & Tobago Cultural Society of B.C. Volunteerism Award:

  • Purpose: This scholarship is intended to assist Grade 12 graduates with tuition toward their first year of post-secondary study.
  • Value: $500
  • Criteria: Open to all graduating (Grade 12) B.C. Secondary School students of any cultural heritage and background, with demonstrated engagement in community volunteerism.
  • Please submit an essay relating to your community involvement and volunteerism and include your intentions for post-secondary studies (Word limit: 500 words).
  • Please provide copies of your academic transcripts for senior coursework (Grades 11 and 12).
  • Please provide proof of upcoming enrolment in a post-secondary institution.
  • Please provide evidence of your community/volunteer activity (e.g., reference letter or email from supervisor or teacher including their contact information).
  • Application Deadline: JUNE 30, 2023
  • Selection Announcement: JULY 23, 2023

3) Wilson Wong Moon Memorial Music Scholarship

  • Purpose: This scholarship is intended to assist students interested in learning to  play the Steel Drum with a qualified Pan Teacher located in the Lower Mainland, B.C.
  • Value: Two separate (2) awards valued at $300 each will be offered annually.
  • Criteria:
    • Open to prospective music students of any age, cultural heritage and background, who intends to take steelpan lessons with one of two specified steelpan schools located in the Lower Mainland, B.C.
    • Please submit an essay relating to your interest in steelpan and why you would like to take lessons (Word limit: 500 words).
    • One (1) scholarship will be awarded per recipient.
    • Recipients will have the option to take steelpan lessons with either Bernard Fernandes’ or Kenrick Headley’s schools, both of which are based in Surrey, B.C. We encourage all applicants to take the responsibility of contacting either of these schools to inquire about tuition, program and registration information.
    • Please provide proof of upcoming enrolment in one of these steelpan schools.
    • Award will be applied as credit to one of the two schools of choice.
    • Application Deadline: OPEN

How to Apply

  • Please submit an electronic submission to scholarships@ttcsbc.org and include the following:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Telephone
    • Email
    • Name of TTCSBC Scholarship Award for which you are applying.
  • For post-secondary scholarship applicants: 
    • Name/location of secondary school and graduation date; and
    • Name/location of intended post-secondary institution and program of study, and date of intended start date.
  • For music scholarship applicants: 
    • Name of intended steelpan school; 
    • Teacher’s contact information; and
    • Proof of upcoming enrolment in one of these steelpan schools.
  • All additional criteria as listed above for each specific Scholarship Award category.
